11 Trendy Ways to Reuse Old Sarees

Are you the one who has lots of sarees in your closet that you no longer wear? And you might be wondering what to do with those sarees! Guess what.. you are not alone. I have seen my mother and sisters also facing the same problem. And I have also seen them converting those sarees into salwar kurtas, lehangas and cushion covers. But as a fashion designer I thought, “Why should a beautiful piece of 5.5 meters of fabric be limited to these 3-4 options only? As a man how can I use these sarees and make something for me”. And this is how I came up with the idea of 11 trendy ways to reuse old sarees. So here I am giving you a LOOK BOOK of 11 outfits i.e:

5 WOMENSWEAR LOOKS, 5 MENSWEAR LOOKS and 1 for the KIDSWEAR.

For this project I used this beautiful Fuchsia Colour intricately woven Handloom Malwari Silk Saree by DIGILOOM – The House of Exquisite Handloom Sarees.

Before getting into the LOOK BOOK, let me explain you why I choose a Handloom Saree to create the looks:

11 trendy ways to reuse old sarees:

LOOK 1: Reuse old Saree to make a Jumpsuit

The jumpsuits with ethnic prints/weaves gives you a very edgy look. Just keep in mind not to use sheer fabric sarees(like chiffon) to create this look as the fabric may get damaged through the seamlines. Reuse the old sarees that are heavy in texture like the Handloom Linen Sarees, Jute Silk Sarees etc.

LOOK 2: Repurpose old Saree to make chic Short Dress

Make a Short Dress out of the old sarees. Experiment with the saree border and place it interestingly to create an illusion. You can achieve this look with almost every saree. Don’t forget to ask your tailor to use the good quality lining inside.

LOOK 3: Make a Pant Suit out of old saree

One can never go wrong with a well constructed pant suit. Remember to reuse the old saree with small or no prints to achieve this look. And most importantly! go for it only if you believe in your tailor’s craftsmanship because, nothing looks cheap than a poorly constructed pant suit.

LOOK 4: Reuse old Sarees to Create Long Skirt and Top

This is the most easiest look to achieve. If you have any saree with an interesting prints or weaves, you are good to go.

Now let’s get into the 5 looks for men from the same Fuchsia colour DIGILOOM Handloom Malwari Silk Saree.

LOOK 5: Reuse Old Saree to create Peplum Top and Pencil Skirt

Peplum Tops are very flattering to any body type. And when you team it with pencil skirt, it gives that X factor to your whole personality. Reuse the old saree to crate this look.

LOOK 6: Make a Coat/Jacket from an old Saree

Yes! You can make a Mens coat/jacket from a saree.. specially Handloom Sarees. These coats made from the sarees serves as a perfect a festive and party wear. As I said earlier, do not forget to use a good quality lining inside.

(Personal Tips: As a person who only wears Khadi and Handloom Coats/Jackets, I always buy good quality Handloom Cotton fabric and use it for the lining)

LOOK 7: Make T – Shirt from a Saree

As you can see above.. The T Shirt looks really cool! So go for it!!

LOOK 8: Reuse Old Saree to make a Shirt

If some part of your saree is torn or damaged but rest is absolutely fine, you can always turn it into a Shirt. This way you get a unique shirt out of a saree that you would never use.

LOOK 9: Sadari made out of Saree

Silk and brocade Sarees are best for the Sadari. This way you can use the old saree (Specially the anchal) to make an interesting Sadari.

LOOK 10: Sherwani made out of Saree

This is one of my favourite! Any Handloom Silk Saree with all over weaves makes it for a good fabric for the Sherwani. So next time if you are planning to buy an expensive Sherwani for your male member, look into your closet. And see if you have any saree that can be converted into sherwani.

LOOK 11: Kurta for a Kid

This is how you can reuse your old saree to make a kurta for your kid. I did not create any look for a girl child because I am 100% sure that you must have made many frocks from your sarees and dupattas for her.

CONCLUSION

Always see saree as a unique piece of fabric or canvas and think how it can be tailored into different outfits. And you will realise the above mentioned and many more looks can be created with the old sarees. Or for that matter.. next time while shopping if you like a design of a Saree, and you think you can make a really unique and cool outfit from it, BUY IT and make one.
