How to take care of Handloom Sarees and Stoles – 1

Handloom fabric is an integral part of the Indian textile industry. And if you are an ardent lover of Sarees, then chances are, you must be having almost all types of hand-woven sarees in your wardrobe. After all, nothing can beat the comfort of handloom sarees. And for you, these sarees are not just a piece of six and a half yards of fabric.  As a designer, I understand the amount of emotional and financial investment that goes in to own a hand-woven saree. So the owner of hand-woven sarees is always looking for the tips on how to take care of the handloom sarees.

In this series of six posts, I am doing just that, i.e helping you with the maintenance of the handloom sarees. So let’s get started with the first post.

How to Wash handloom Sarees and Stoles

1. Soak the saree in salt water for some time(half an hour) before washing it. This prevents the natural colors of the sarees from bleeding.
2. But do not soak it for a longer duration as it may lead to discoloration.
3. After soaking, rinse the saree with cold water 2-3 times before washing it with detergent.
4. Use good quality, mild detergents from reputed brands to hand wash your sarees.
5. Never use bleach or any harsh chemical to remove the stain from a saree.
6. Once detergent is applied, wash it off quickly. Don’t let the detergent stay for long on saree.
7. Handwoven sarees are too delicate to use a brush on it. NEVER use a brush to remove the stain from handloom saree.
8. Always use cold water.
9. Never wash your handloom sarees in a washing machine.
